BANCROFT - The North Union baseball team scored three runs in the seventh inning, but could not overcome a five-run deficit in a 5-4 loss to Spalding Catholic in the championship of the Spalding Tournament in Granville, Iowa, on Sunday.
North Union's Brett Deitering hit a double in the top of the seventh inning with runners on first and second to get the Warrior rally going. But the scoring effort was too little, too late.
The Warriors had scored in the sixth after Sawyer Doocy reached first on an error and advanced to third on Brett Thackery and Garrett Johnson's fielder's choices.
North Union's Cody Runksmeier stepped up and delivered a two-out RBI single to plate Doocy.
Jake Adams went 2-for-3 and Garret Johnson went 1-for-3 with a double to help lead the Warrior offense. Deitering, Doocy and Runksmeier each went 1-for-4 with an RBI for North Union.
Zack Hurlburt pitched six innings for the Warriors, giving up five runs on seven hits, while striking out to take the loss.
North Union (19-6) travels to Algona, Iowa, for a 5:30 p.m. game on Thursday.
