Although the IHD parade has come and gone, I would like to take a few moments to share a rare opportunity that local teachers were involved with this year at the parade. Rather than passing out the traditional candy to the children on the route, Education Minnesota Fairmont members distributed books.
The books varied from coloring books, Dora books, CARS activity books, and books age-appropriate for older children. The books came from the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers by the way of the national First Book program.
First Book was founded in 1992 to create an organization dedicated to providing new books to children. The organization provides books to children in need, addressing one of the most important factors affecting literacy; access to books.
An innovative leader in social enterprise, First Book has distributed more than 90 million news books to thousands of communities throughout the United States and Canada, with Fairmont being one of them. Hopefully, these books will improve interest in reading, increase children's desire to learn and increase reading at home.
On the parade route, we saw many eyes wide-opened, young and old alike, when we passed out the 800-1,000 books we received. We heard many, many thank-yous from parade-watchers. It was indeed a good day for the students in our schools and young ones yet to attend.
