Fairmont tops Zumbrota-Mazeppa 16-3

FAIRMONT - Fairmont Legion Post 36 baseball went 1-2 in the Le Sueur-Henderson tournament this past weekend, losing to Kenyon-Wanamingo 5-2 and falling 11-10 to BOLD in the second game before defeating Zumbrota-Mazeppa 16-3 in a four-inning game.

Luke Becker and John Ellis each had two hits for Post 36 in their opening game against Kenyon-Wanamingo. Jay Ruen had two hits as well for Fairmont, including an RBI double.

Fairmont's Ben Gratz had one hit and two RBIs to add to the Fairmont offense.

Jordan Voss pitched four innings, giving up five runs - two earned - on five hits and striking out one. Bryce Holm came in and pitched the final two innings, giving up three hits while striking out two.

Fairmont jumped out to a 5-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings against BOLD in the second game. BOLD came back and scored three runs in the fourth and four in the fifth innings to give them the 7-6 lead.

Fairmont took back the lead in the top of the seventh. They scored three runs to make the score 9-7. BOLD would not go quietly and scored two runs to put the game into extra innings.

Both teams scored one run in the eighth inning, but BOLD was finally able to capture the win with a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Ruen had two hits for Fairmont, including a home run. Becker added two hits and two RBIs, while Ryan Noll added two hits and one RBI. Andy Reiter had a double and one RBI for Fairmont and Holm scored two runs.

Reiter pitched five innings, giving up seven runs - three earned - on nine hits, striking out two.

Holm pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits and striking out four. Ellis pitched 1/3 of an inning, walking one and hitting one batter.

Fairmont got a win in their third game against Zumbrota-Mazeppa in the tournament, winning 16-3 in four innings.

After scoring five in the first inning and six in the second inning, Fairmont had the victory in hand.

Voss pitched three innings, giving up three runs on two hits and striking out one. Brandon Brooks came in for the fourth inning, not allowing a single hit and striking out one.

Becker and Ruen each had three hits and each scored three runs to lead the Fairmont offense.

Ellis added three hits and 2 RBIs for Fairmont, while Gratz added two hits. Holm had an RBI double and Brooks had two RBIs in the win.

Fairmont Legion Post 36 (2-2) hosts New Ulm Gold 8 p.m. today at Herb Wolf Field.
