BANCROFT, Iowa - The North Union Warriors won two games at the Spalding Tournament in Granville, Iowa, this past weekend, defeating Unity Christian 11-6 before beating Gehlan Catholic 3-1.
Brett Deitering's three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning against Unity Christian helped give North Union a 5-0 lead.
Unity Christian came back and scored three runs in the top of the third to make it a two-run game.
Brett Thackery hit a double in the bottom of the fourth to score Deitering and Sawyer Doocy.
A four-run fifth inning gave the Warriors an 11-4 lead going into the final two frames.
North Union held on to win the game, despite Unity Christian scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 11-6.
Brett Deitering led the Warriors, going 3-for-4 with his home run and five RBIs, while scoring three runs. Doocy went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI, while Thackery went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
North Union's Alex Deitering went 1-for-2 with two runs scored for the offensive effort.
Cody Runksmeier pitched six innings for North Union, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out six.
Zack Hurlburt pitched the final inning, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out one.
North Union scored right away in the first inning of the second game against Gehlan Catholic on their way to a 3-1 win. The three runs would be enough for a Warrior win, with Doocy pitching the full seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out 12.
Brett Deitering started the game out for North Union by reaching first base on a walk. Deitering scooted around to third on two fielders' choice outs before scoring on a wild pitch for the first run of the game.
Doocy reached on a fielder's choice in his at-bat, and advanced to second on the wildpitch.
Garrett Johnson scored Doocy for the second run of the game with a base hit to right field.
Johnson would add to the Warriors' lead in the third inning. After hitting a base hit to reach first base, Johnson advanced to third on Runksmeier's base hit.
A sacrifice-fly by Alex Deitering scored Johnson for the Warrior's third run and a 3-0 lead.
Gehlan Catholic had a lead-off double in the fourth inning and a run scored on an error by North Union to make it 3-1.
North Union (19-5) hosts Harris-Lake Park today in Bancroft for a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader.
