FAIRMONT - Private family services for Raymond L. Stougaard, 89, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held at a later date. A public visitation will be 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont.

Raymond passed away on Tuesday morning, June 19, 2012, at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont.

Ray was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on Nov. 13, 1922. He attended schools in the Twin Cities. He graduated in 1940 from Murray High School and then started his college education at Macalester College in St. Paul. Midway through he, like many young men, decided to enlist to aid the country during World War II. He was honorably discharged after serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. He returned to Macalester and graduated in 1946.

Ray married the love of his life, Aileen Shannon, in St. Paul, on June 25, 1949. They started their married life in International Falls where Ray was a reporter for the International Falls Daily Journal. Two years later, they moved to Fairmont where he was news editor at KSUM for a short stint before joining the Fairmont Daily Sentinel, which later became a part of Mickelson Media, Inc (MMI). He began his career at the Fairmont Daily Sentinel as managing editor and later was promoted to editor, then publisher. In 1974, he was also put in charge of the MMI Newspaper Group until that group was sold in 1980. In 1982, he retired from a full-time management role with MMI, but continued as an active board member until MMI was sold in 1989.

Ray believed in and loved the Fairmont area community. He was active as an officer of the Chamber of Commerce, Fairmont Go, and Rotary International. He was one of the co-founders of both the Fairmont Area Foundation and the Fairmont Chain of Lakes Yacht Club. He also enjoyed sailing, skiing, golf, tennis, reading, photography, and home woodworking projects.

He is survived by his bride of 62 years, Aileen; three children and their spouses: Ann and Clark Gorder of Omaha, Neb.; David and Holly Stougaard of Mankato, Minn.; Sara and Michael Pattison of Edmonds, Wash.; six grandchildren: Jaeme Kawa, Pollyanna Gorder, Grant Pattison, Jessica Stougaard, Alyse Pattison, and Eliza Stougaard; and two great grandchildren: Harper and Holden Kawa.

The family extends their gratitude to the staff of the Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center, especially the Rainbow Care Unit, for their support and friendship as they cared for Ray. Donations may be directed to the Fairmont Area Foundation or Lakeview Methodist Health Care Foundation, Inc.
