BANCROFT, Iowa - Sawyer Doocy hurled a two-hit shutout from the mound and hammered a home run on offense to guide the North Union Warriors to a 7-0 victory over the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines during an Iowa prep baseball doubleheader on Monday night in Gilmore City, Iowa.
The host Wolverines earned a split during the Corn Belt Conference twinbill by edging the Warriors in the other game, 1-0.
Doocy recorded an incredible 15 strikeouts and issued only one walk in pitching seven scoreless innings on the hill to earn the winning decision in the 7-0 victory. Doocy assisted his own cause by slugging a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning en route to a game-best four RBIs on the game.
Brett Deitering scored the first run for North Union in the top of the third inning on Doocy's dropped flyball to center. Brett Thackery reached on an error and scored Doocy for the second run.
Garrett Johnson's base hit to right field scored Thackery, who had advanced to second on a wild pitch, for the 3-0 Warrior lead.
Deitering started the scoring rally again in the top of the fourth inning for North Union, getting on with a fielder's choice. Evan Hagebock hit a double to send Deitering to third, bringing Doocy to the plate.
In the second pitch of the at-bat, Doocy sent a blast over the center-field fence, scoring Deitering and Hagebock to make it 6-0 in the Warriors' favor.
Thackery was hit by a pitch in the top of the seventh inning to get on base for the fourth time. He then stole second base and advanced to third on an error.
Johnson, who went 2-for-4 in the game, drove in Thackery with a single to left, collecting his second RBI and giving North Union a 7-0 lead.
Doocy, Thackery and Deitering all scored twice for the Warriors, with Hagebock adding the other run.
Hagebock went 1-for-3 in the game, while Alex Deitering and Brandon Kollasch went 1-for-4.
West Bend Mallard's Mitch Bonnstetter hit a solo home run on the second pitch of Game 2 to give the Wolverines an early 1-0 lead.
Jason Zinnel threw seven innings of two-hit baseball for the Wolverines, holding the Warriors scoreless en route to the 1-0 victory.
North Union's Hagebock recorded both Warrior hits, singling in the first and sixth innings.
After giving up Bonnstetter's leadoff home run, North Union's Zack Hurlburt pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and gave up just four hits with eight strikeouts.
Brett Thackery came in for North Union and faced two batters and walked one before getting a strikeout for the final out.
North Union (16-5) hosts Central Springs at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Bancroft.
