BANCROFT, Iowa - Spirit Lake scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to edge the host Warriors in the championship game of the North Union baseball tournament Saturday in Bancroft.
Sawyer Doocy went 2-for-3 with two doubles, Alex Deitering went 3-for-4 with a double, Brett Thackery went 2-for-4 and Garrett Johnson went 1-for-2 with two RBIs for runner-up North Union in the final game.
Cody Runksmeier pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits, while striking out three in receiving no decision. Doocy came in for relief in the final two innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits and struck out two to take the loss.
In Game 1, North Union held on to earn a 7-6 victory over Estherville-Lincoln Central.
The Warriors got out to a 6-0 lead after three innings before ELC came back in the fourth and fifth innings to score five runs, making it a 7-5 game. Despite ELC scoring one run in the top of the seventh, the Warriors were able to hold on for the win.
Doocy scored twice and went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Warriors.
Runksmeier went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, Alex Deitering went 1-for-2 with a double, Jake Adams went 1-for-3 to produce two RBIs, while Brandon Kollasch went 2-for-3 in the win.
Thackery earned the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on nine hits, striking out three and walking four. Runksmeier pitched two innings, giving up one run on one hit, while walking two and fanning one.
Doocy earned the save, pitching the final 2/3 innings, striking out two and giving up one hit.
North Union (14-3) travels to Gilmore City, Iowa, to play a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader against West Bend-Mallard.
