North Union baseball lineup coasts to pair of triumphs

BANCROFT, Iowa - Sawyer Doocy utilized his potent bat and strong pitching arm to help guide the North Union Warriors to a 4-2 victory over West Fork during non-league prep baseball action Friday night in Sheffield, Iowa.

Doocy produced three hits, including a pair of doubles, to generate two RBIs to pace the Warriors' eight-hit performance.

Brett Deitering, Cody Runksmeier, Doocy and Brett Thackery strung together four hits to engineer North Union's two-run top of the first.

Deitering crossed the plate on Doocy's double, while Runksmeier scored on Thackery's double.

With the score tied at 2-all, Brandon Kollasch delivered a clutch pinch-hit double to set the table for the Warriors during the top of the seventh. Zach Ditsworth bunted pinch runner Colin Runksmeier to third base before Brett Deitering was hit by a pitch.

Deitering swiped second base before Colin Runksmeier scored the go-ahead run on Cody Runksmeier's RBI grounder. Deitering later scored on an insurance run on Doocy's RBI double to left.

Doocy recorded six strikeouts and issued two walks in two hitless and scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.

Cody Runksmeier gave up two runs on three hits, struck out five and walked four in five frames of work to receive no decision.

North Union (3-1) hosts Class 3A, No. 2-ranked Clear Lake on Tuesday in Bancroft, Iowa. The junior varsity starts at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity game to follow.

North Union 16, Garner-Hayfield 1 (4 innings) - Alex Deitering erupted for three hits, including a pair of doubles, and collected two RBIs to pace the Warriors' 16-1, four-inning nonconference rout over the Cardinals on Wednesday night in Garner, Iowa.

Alex Deitering went 3-for-4 and scored four runs for North Union, while Brett Deitering went 2-for-3 with one RBI and scored one run.

Cody Runksmeier went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and scored one run for the Warriors, while Brett Thackery went 2-for-3 and crossed the plate three times.

Evan Hagebock contributed one hit, two RBIs and three runs scored to the winning performance, while teammate Zack Hurlburt added a two-run single.

Hagebock allowed one run on two hits, struck out one and walked three in two innings on the mound to net the victory.

Zach Ditsworth struck out one, did not issue a walk and gave up one hit in two scoreless innings of relief for North Union.
