We are among those sad to see the demise of the Interlaken Heritage Days Summer Fun Festival in Fairmont. The number of organizers for the event is down to two, and they say they just cannot handle the workload that goes into putting a festival together. We understand their concerns and limits.
What does it mean for Fairmont not to have a summer festival? Well, it's worse than if there was one. Summer events such as Interlaken Heritage Days bring people to town and can bring out the community to enjoy each other's company.
Yet an honest assessment would conclude that the Summer Fun Festival has struggled over the years in some respects. Turnout has not been great. And the festival has morphed in its identity as it tried to locate its appeal. Some things were popular, such as the downtown street dance and parade. But the event never caught fire overall. It certainly never approached the turnout of the big local event of the summer, the Martin County Fair.
We would note that a summer festival in Fairmont died off once before. And then was brought back through Interlaken Heritage Days. So, a festival could be resumed at some point, if there are volunteers willing to step forward.
