BLUE EARTH - The Fairmont/Martin County West wrestling team was dominant at both ends of the weight spectrum Saturday.

F/MCW's No. 5-ranked 106-pounder Trevor Schultz and heavyweight Colton Hines each collected individual championships during the Dick Maher Invitational in Blue Earth.

Schultz and Hines were each 3-0 during the tourney.

Schultz downed Worthington's Class AA, No. 4-ranked Anthony Luft in the semifinals, 4-0, before downing Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/ Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton's Class A, No. 3-ranked Skyler Petry in the championship match, 5-3.

"That was by far the toughest weight bracket in the tournament. There were three individuals in the bracket ranked in the top five at state," said F/MCW head coach Jake Tietje.

Schultz lost to Luft and Petry last season.

"Avenging that loss (to Petry) was even more important," said Tietje.

Schultz also won a trophy for being named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Hines scored a fall over Mankato East's Collin Gabler in 4:30 in the semis, before scoring a 3-1 win in triple overtime in the championship tilt against Blue Earth Area's No. 3-ranked Josh Johnson.

"Colton came straight from football into wrestling and had one day off and that was (last) Sunday. ... That (winning in three OTs) takes a lot of guts," said Tietje.

Spenser Meadows captured third place for F/MCW at 152, topping East's Cody Lorentz, 8-4, going 3-1 in the bracket.

"He (Meadows) had a very good (tournament) representation," said Tietje.

Kory Brown (171) and Nic Vanasse (132) each placed fifth for F/MCW. Vanasse went 1-2 en route to fifth, while Brown was 2-2, including a 10-2 win over Worthington's Blake Schroeder in the fifth-place match.

"He's (Brown) one of our up and comers and he keeps working hard," said Tietje.

Lance Brolsma went 1-2 at 182, while Tanner Lange (138) and Devon Ford (145) were each 0-2 for the F/MCW varsity.

"Our schedule is a little bit frontloaded. But we'll get that experience going into January and February. ... With a long football season we have a handful of guys nursing some injuries. Hopefully after Christmas we'll put together a lineup for dual team success," said Tietje.

Teamwise, F/MCW placed ninth with 79.5 points. Blue Earth Area was fourth with 135 and Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther took 10th with 69. Class A, No. 1-ranked Jackson County Central won the team title with 248.5 points.

The host Bucs led the area contingent with eight medals.

No. 4-ranked Carter Hanson (160), Kysten Zierke (195) and No. 3-ranked Johnson (285) all placed second.

Hanson lost a 15-2 major decision to Jackson County Central's No. 1-ranked Darick Vancura, while Zierke fell to Brainerd's Casey Biever, 4-0. Johnson dropped the 3-1 triple OT decision to Hines at heavyweight.

Mike Ankeny (126) and Jesse Alleven (138) were each third for the Bucs. Ankeny topped East's Leon Fletcher 12-1 in the third-place contest, while Alleven pinned Brainerd's Tyler Spangler in 4:43.

Alec Huber (113) pocketed fourth, falling 11-6 to WEM/JWP's Dylan Wolff in the third-place contest, while Issac Vasquez (120), Chris Ramos (182) and Micah Twedt (220) each claimed fifth.

Vasquez downed United South Central's Jake Gonsalez 4-2, Ramos pinned Brainerd's Spencer Kanges in overtime in 7:29 and Twedt pinned WEM/JWP's Taylor Grams in 4:20.

Luke Schavey went 2-2 at 132 pounds, while Jacob Johnson was 1-2 at 145. Ryan Gronewold (106) and David Franta (152) were each 0-2 to round out the Buc varsity.

The Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther Knights left Blue Earth with five medals.

Bryon Forstner (126) led the team with a runner-up finish. Forstner fell to JCC's Eliot Jurries 14-5 in the championship match. Brett Joramo captured third place at 182 with an 8-1 win over Worthington's Carson Hagen.

Jason McLaughlin (160) placed fifth with a fall over Maple River's Aaron Wittrock in 3:51. Jon Whitney (145) and top-ranked Adam Cooling (152) placed sixth. Whitney lost 6-0 to Worthington's Jacob Clarke, while Cooling won his first match but forfeited fifth place to Maple River's Mitch Stoltzman via an injury suffered in Cooling's third match.

Fairmont/Martin County West travels to Waseca on Tuesday, before wrestling in the Pizza Ranch Invitational on Saturday in Jackson.

Blue Earth Area hits the road to face Maple River on Thursday.

Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther hosts Le Sueur-Henderson on Friday in Truman.

Fairmont/Martin County West had six wrestlers go 2-0 during the B-squad tournament. Remington Kuehl, Elijah Gronewald, Phillip Bowie, Nathan Gillis, Luis Figueroa and Jay Diaz were all 2-0 in their brackets. Trenton Rossow and Zach Ramos were each 1-1 and Harley Luhmann was 0-2.
