FAIRMONT - "Welcome to Mondo-Mart" reads the sign hanging over the stage at Fairmont Opera House.
Mondo-Mart is the setting for this year's Children's Theatre production: "Dude, You Hear What I Hear?"
"It's a Christmas musical for kids that actually has a message," said Lisa Carlson, chairwoman of the Children's Theatre board.
“Mannequins” — played by Claudia Bleess, in pink, and Ceci Driano — react to the sound of an intruder after hours at Mondo-Mart in the Children’s Theatre Christmas production of “Dude, You Hear What I Hear?”
The storyline focuses on a little boy left in a department store after it closes.
"The mannequins come to life, and they think Christmas is only about sales and shopping and what they hear over the intercom system," Carlson said.
Using humor and fun holiday songs, the play shares the "true message of Christmas," she said.
Twenty-three local children in grades 4 through 8 are in the production, with Kim Koppen directing and Molly Bleess in charge of music.
The show runs about 50 minutes, with performances slated for 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
A performance for local elementary students is also planned for today.
Tickets are $6 at Hy-Vee until 10 a.m. Saturday, after which they can be purchased one hour before performances at the Opera House box office.
Children's Theatre is a branch of Fairmont Opera House.
