Bar owner kicking out bad seeds

Jenn Brookens — Sentinel Staff Writer
POSTED: December 22, 2009

TRIMONT - The El Rodeo restaurant and bar in Trimont is considered a hot spot on Saturdays due to its house mariachi band and catering to the Hispanic population and culture. However, there are some nights when things have gotten out of control, with fighting, loitering and drinking on neighboring property, and other incidents where police needed to get involved.

At Monday's City Council meeting, both the city and bar owner Mike Gonzalez took actions to curb this bad behavior.

"I have zero tolerance for anyone that tries to fight or trash my place," Gonzalez said. "If they start that, they are out. I will ban them."

After a few attempts to have individuals act as security on Saturday evenings, Gonzalez has hired a professional security team, G and L Securities from Mankato.

Security Sergeant Matthew Lange also attended the meeting. He explained that he and his partner go through the same training as law enforcement officers and are licensed to be armed. However, the team will only carry tasers and handcuffs. They will also have a security van to hold an individual until police arrive.

"We decided not to be armed here, since we do have a law enforcement presence here as well," Lange said.

The company also provides similar services to a club in Willmar.

"We are in full cooperation with law enforcement there, as well," Lange said, going as far as to ask whether the city and police would prefer them to wear their security guard uniforms while at El Rodeo.

"I think that is exactly what we need," said Mayor Thomas Eckmann.

The company performed security at El Rodeo last weekend, and it seemed to have the desired effect, with no disruptions that needed police attention.

City Council members, police and Gonzalez all seem pleased with the results.

"I think this is a really good step," said council member Karen Koerder. "Mike is really giving it his best shot."

During the meeting with Lange, the council mentioned some of the specific problems they want to see addressed, such as patrons going outside and drinking alcohol, along with loitering on the properties of other nearby businesses and residences.

"It hasn't been a problem lately, because it's been cold," said council member Thomas Hage. "But it will probably come up again when the weather gets nice."

While the hiring of the security team for El Rodeo was a plus, the council also prepared to take other action if necessary. A proposed change to the town's ordinance to cut down the sale of alcohol after 1 a.m. was introduced, with possible enactment at a future meeting.

"There's only two places that sell until 2 a.m. in the county, and that's Welcome and here," Eckmann said.

While the possible ordinance change was introduced, the council decided not to act on it until results are seen with the new El Rodeo security team.

"I really think he's on the right track," Hage said. "But we still need to safeguard the community."

With holiday celebrations - specifically New Year's Eve when the restaurant portion of El Rodeo will open at 2 a.m. New Year's Day - the council agreed busy nights with the new security team would be the real test.

If the council later decides to pass the new ordinance, the change would not take effect until the business needs to re-apply for its liquor license.

In other business, the council held its budget and levy public hearing. After an originally proposed 6.79 percent increase, the levy increase was dropped and approved at 6.1 percent, or $14,259. The cut was made after the council agreed to drop wage increases down from 4 percent to 3 percent. The total levy amount for 2010 is $246,602.

Not to mention ml0295 is the only one defending this disgrace to law enforcement. Any person with a brain that functioned would know Matthew Lange is a joke and wouldnt defend him.

ml0295 is Matthew Lange. Not only is his company not a legit company but he hires employees that have NO training at all. He puts civilans at risk by hiring non properly trained officers. He hired a female officer and ended up getting her pregnant. Not only did he leave her, and ask her to hide the pregnancy but also was with someone else at the same time. And Matthew Lange it does say you were arrested for impersonating a police officer. No one likes you in Watonwan County or Blue Earth. Matthew Lange is a joke. He should not work in law enforcement, and definately not own a security company.

Nice, Your so petty for continuing to bring this issue forward. I would like to add the fact that this sentinel article has only good things to say about this firm in question. I think you should get a different topic to blog about because this is not going anywhere. Not to mention that was not slander because i know the facts. Its all public record. Look up the name on a public records site. you will see what Mr. Raymond has done and to who. Not to mention you made it my business when you told me about it. Let it go. The only slander and libel being said is the crap from you and others who dont know the story. Lange is charged with possesion of a firearm, not impersonating an officer. I invite you to look it up or call and get the record from blue earth county.

It is time to leave this issue alone.... It has happened and Lange is moving on with his life and career. I think people should let this go. Find something else to blog about.

and to think, I thought I was the only one that thought Matthew Lange was a fraud. Even his partner Josh Gibson jumped ship on his bogus security company. There is no defamation of character when every thing is public record. The city of Fairmont should look at who they praise, all they have here is a Barney Fife wannabe. Hire some real off duty cops if you want to control the bar scene not Matt Lange, imposter.

Well then sentinelfan1, It is illegal because i know what charges were filed in this case, and what the outcome of it was, and there is no charge of IMPERSONATING a police Officer. The charges pending are public record and you are welcome to them. You will find TWO equipment violations and a pending permit to carry violation. Things are being sorted out and the defendant is currently working on a agreement. I have noticed all this attention based on this individual and think it is quite commical. THere are Police officers getting DUI, domestic assault, stealing from tax payers, acting in disregard to the safety of the public, and you have to make issues out of individuals who try to earn an honest living. Find something else to talk about. Perhaps you should look at your own issues and deal with them.

ml0295 -- it's only against the law if it ISN'T True... and now that you are a public figure attending public meetings, I'm not so sure you can't be made fun of.

I suggest you either give some facts to dispute the Free Press story, or shut up.

I also looked at your company's webpage. You're not qualified to be Trimont's dog catcher.

Oh yeah, I love the fact that you've given yourself the title of Sergeant. Wow.

I suggest the Sentinel follow up on this article.

WOW BrotherGrim, you should really get your facts straight or check your sources before you post anything about a person. Here is a link for you to check out: *****://****revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=609.765&year=2009&keyword_type=all&keyword=defamation.

Minnesota holds defamation a serious crime. And what you have just done is violated this statute.

Apparently you can't post a link on this forum, so just google Matthew Lange Mankato.

It's too bad that drunks have to try to ruin the party, but I'm glad to see the owner take pro-active steps to curb the problem. Kudos to him.
