Marlin H. Mitchell

WORTHINGTON - MARLIN H. MITCHELL, age 65, of rural Rushmore, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at his home. He was born Dec. 22, 1943, near Amboy, Minn., to parents, Harold and Alice (Rowley) Mitchell. He graduated from Ogilvie Public High School in 1961. After graduating, Marlin served his nation in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Washington and also served in the Philippines as a sea plane mechanic. He received his honorable discharge in December 1964. After the service, he attended Thief River Falls Vocational School and completed a course in aircraft mechanics.

On March 12, 1966, Marlin was united in marriage to Judy Rieke. They lived in Thief River Falls while he attended school and then they moved to New Market, Minn., while Marlin worked for Northwest Airlines. In 1968, they moved to Worthington and Marlin worked for Schmidt's Aero Service. He later owned and operated Import Repair Service in Worthington. In May 1980, he went to work for Metz Baking Company as a truck mechanic until retiring in February 2007.

On Dec. 23, 1999, Marlin was united in marriage to Kathy (Balk) Wittry and they made their home on a farm south of Wilmont.

Marlin was a member of the American Legion Post in Worthington and Pheasants Forever. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and playing cards.

He was baptized on March 24, 2009, by Father David Krogman at the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., and became a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Wilmont.

Marlin is survived by his wife, Kathy Mitchell, Rural Rushmore; two children, Gregory (Jody) Mitchell, Fairmont, Minn.; and Debra (Rick) Nelsen, Fulda, Minn.; three step-children, Shawn (Tammi) Wittry, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Bobbi (Myron) Ruesch, Marshall, Minn.; and Nicki (Jason) Platt, Lake Wilson, Minn.; five grandchildren and six step-grandchildren, Allison, Benjamin and Jacob Mitchell, Jada and Christopher Nelsen, Evan and Avery Wittry, Abbi and Emmi Ruesch and Callie and Broox Platt, brothers and sisters, Edith (Bill) Packard, Wyoming, Minn.; Bonnie (Clayton) Berg, Ogilvie, Minn.; Genevieve (Richard) Lundberg, Mora, Minn.; Lowell (Myrtle) Mitchell, Foreston, Minn.; Dennis (Peggy) Mitchell, Apple Valley, Minn.; and June (Gary) Marana, Duluth, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant daughter.

Memorials are preferred to Sanford Hospice of Worthington, 1935 Woodland Court, Worthington, MN 56187.

Visitation will be today from 4-8 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington. Visitation will also be an hour prior to the service at the church.

The service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Wilmont with Father Timothy Hall officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Wilmont.
