Lend veterans a hand

In this holiday season, there are many worthy causes to support. The Salvation Army in Fairmont comes to mind. We'd like to point out another one we believe is very important: Supporting needy veterans and their families.

"Veterans Assisting Veterans" will be held next Saturday, Dec. 12, with collection points at the Fairmont VFW, Sherburn Legion and Blue Earth Legion. Many items are needed - see article on page 2A in today's Sentinel.

We hope people will remember the men and women who have served all of us and now find themselves needing our help.

Time for structural reform

There was gruesome news out this week about the state of Minnesota's estimated budget shortfall for the next four years. The deficits total $6.6 billion, with $1.2 billion of the shortfall coming through mid-2011. This bodes poorly for state programs and local government aid, and threatens citizens' wallets if state lawmakers starting eyeing tax hikes.

We believe the keys for the state are to rein in spending while making the business environment more friendly. Business growth and hiring will boost tax revenue.

Zaharia earns praise

Congratulations are in order for John Zaharia, the proprietor of Zaharia Funeral Home in Truman. He has been named one of 10 Outstanding Young Minnesotans, an award given by the Jaycees.

In addition to being a businessman, Zaharia volunteers with the fire department, and he got the Truman Community Club out of a state of dormancy. He also is involved in youth sports and his church. But what shines the most is his attitude: He believes in involvement and remaining positive. He is a great representative of his town and the area.

Tragedy made worse

We extend our condolences to Russell and Linda Osmundsen, who recently lost their belongings and their beloved family pets, including dogs, cats, hamsters, rats and birds, in a Fairmont house fire.

It is unfortunate that rumors swirled around the couple, including talk of them starting the fire intentionally or through operation of a meth lab. None of that is true.

We hope the Osmundsens can rebuild some joy in their lives after this tragedy and malicious gossip.
