Closing Gitmo simply is not realistic possibility
Gary Andersen, Lee SmithEven Democrats in Congress seem to realize that simply closing the Guantanamo Bay detention center and shipping scores of hardened terrorists to the United States is a bad idea. President Barack Obama, who won a substantial number of votes because of his promise to close Guantanamo Bay by January, also appears to be having second thoughts.
But concern over Americans' security isn't a factor for a certain percentage of liberals. They now are condemning Congress for failure to clear the way for an irresponsible closing of the detention center.
A new television advertisement, reported this week by The New York Times, is highly critical of Congress in regard to Guantanamo Bay. But what is fascinating about the advertisement - and members of its sponsor, the National Campaign to Close Guantanamo - is that they have succumbed to the cult of Obama. Though the president himself has admitted he is having difficulty coming up with a suitable plan to close the detention center, the organization holds him absolutely blameless.
The position taken by the group and others is breathtakingly irresponsible. Some of those being held at the detention center have made it clear that their fondest wishes are to kill Americans. No other country - repeat, no other country - is willing to accept them.
Yet the NCCG and its ilk want to close the center, even if it means sending the terrorists to the United States.
That is unacceptable. We hope Obama and Democratic lawmakers have enough backbone to resist.
