Opera House proposing a toast
Meg Alexander — Staff WriterFAIRMONT - Go to a show in the Twin Cities and the venue is likely to serve alcohol. It's almost a given.
With that thought in mind, Kathi Peterson at Fairmont Opera House pitched the idea to the board. Its decision was unanimous.
Saturday, when Los Pinguos performs for the first show of the season, beer and wine will be sold to patrons one hour before the performance begins at 7:30 p.m., and during intermission.
Before getting the board's approval, Peterson had to check into insurance and licensing requirements and weigh those costs against beer and wine prices.
"It looked to be a profitable venture - not a big moneymaker, but some money to help with operating funds," she said.
And the Opera House can use all the extra dollars it gets. Subscription series memberships are down this year, along with business sponsorship for each show.
"The purpose behind deciding to sell alcohol at the Opera House is really twofold," said board member Jenny Jepsen. "... First as an attempt to raise funds at the Opera House. As a nonprofit, we are always looking for ways to increase revenue. The second reason was the thought that a lot of people might like to have a drink before the show, and by offering that opportunity we can enhance the notion of going to a show as a night out on the town."
A red and white wine for $4.50 per glass, or a light and strong beer at $3.50, will be available to those of legal drinking age.
"We're playing it by ear at first to see what patrons want," Peterson said.
Commemorative Fairmont Opera House wine glasses will be on display, with order forms for purchases.
The Opera House also will sell raffle tickets - $1 each or $5 for six tickets - before performances and during intermissions. Sovell Jewelry is donating the first raffle item. The winner will be announced after intermission.
The "bar" will be tended by volunteers and located in the upper mezzanine level. For anyone not interested in having a drink, food and non-alcoholic beverages still will be served in the Footlight Lounge.
