FAIRMONT - Martin Tow's double woke up the Fairmont American Legion Post 36 offense just in time Thursday.
Tow's two-out extra-base hit in the sixth frame drove in the tying run to help the team to a 3-2 win over Mankato American at Cardinal Park in Fairmont.
Earlier in the day, New Ulm Gold scored an 8-3 win over Fairmont.
"I don't know if we took them too lightly or we didn't have our heads in the game. ... Martin Tow came up big with a two-out double that tied it up," said Post 36 co-head coach Tyler Nawrocki of Fairmont's effort against Mankato American.
In the sixth inning, with Mankato leading 2-0, starting pitcher Griffin Kozitzen was cruising with a one-hitter and retired the first two Fairmont batters. However, Tanner Nawrocki kept the inning alive with a single to left and claimed second when Joey Fitzgerald reached on an error.
Tow then stepped to the plate and cranked a double to left, plating both runners to tie the score.
Tow claimed third base on the throw home in the attempt to get Fitzgerald.
Tow then scored what proved to be the game-winning run when Marcus Teachout reached on a miscue.
Teachout then retired the first two Mankato batters he faced in the seventh frame on comebackers to the mound, before Zach Woodside reached on a double to right. But a groundout to first ended the contest.
Dan Billiar and Tyler Swanson had RBI hits for Mankato.
Teachout recorded the win, allowing two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. Kozitzen took the defeat, allowing three runs on three hits with four strikeouts and one walk in six frames.
New Ulm Gold 8, Fairmont 3 - Garrett Fischer went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in Gold's 8-3 win over Fairmont.
Zach Fischer also scored twice, while Kyle M. Fischer, Kurt Domeier and Brock Sieve each drove in a run.

Joey Fitzgerald, Jon Traetow, Joe Duflo, Martin Tow and Brennan Holm had Fairmont's hits. Taylor Nawrocki took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in six-plus innings. Traetow walked one in a relief role.
