'Mardi Gras' scholars named
Kylie Saari — Staff WriterFAIRMONT - In February, area residents were invited to get dressed up and celebrate at Presentation College's Mardi Gras party.
Recently, four students reaped the benefits.
Daniel Schroeder received a $3,180 scholarship while Sarah Oppedal, Anne Olesen and Amanda Sailor each were awarded $1,200 with proceeds from the event.
Students submitted essays detailing why they should receive scholarships.
This was the second year for the party, and this year's scholarships went to students studying to receive allied health degrees - degrees in medical assisting, radiological technology, surgical technician or biology.
All four students are involved in the radiology technology program. The scholarship is only available to students already enrolled at the Fairmont campus of the college. Students must attend full time, and have at least a 3.0 grade-point average.
The Mardi Gras event raised nearly $7,000, an amount well above last year's number.
"It shows how the Fairmont community is in support of Presentation College," said Traci Lardy, director of Presentation College. "We kept the money local, and we are appreciative of the support."
Next year's Mardi Gras fund-raiser will take place Feb. 13.
