Juveniles arrested in fire probe
Jenn Brookens — Staff WriterLEWISVILLE - Two juvenile males have been arrested in connection with a fire that destroyed three buildings in Lewisville.
The Watonwan County Sheriff's Office reported that the boys - ages 12 and 13 - were seen in and around the buildings shortly before the fire was reported.
One of the boys was arrested Wednesday evening; the other Thursday afternoon. The boys were taken to the juvenile detention center in New Ulm.
According to Assistant Watonwan County Attorney Kevin Lin, the boys face two counts of arson and one count of negligent fire. All counts are felonies.
Because of their ages, the names of the boys are not being released.
One made a court appearance Thursday while the other was expected to be in court Friday.
Following the court appearance, the boy seen Thursday was released to the custody of his parents or guardian. It was expected the boy in court Friday also would be released.
The next hearing for the boys will be an admit-or-deny hearing, which likely will be scheduled in the next two to three weeks.
Wednesday's fire started in a vacant building and firefighters were called out shortly before 7 p.m.
Because of strong winds, the fire spread to two other buildings; one used for private storage while the others were vacant.
At least 14 fire departments responded to help Lewisville firefighters and were on scene until about 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.
