Isaac Dallas Kolstad, of Mankato, was in critical condition Sunday.
Former Minnesota Gophers quarterback Philip Robert Nelson was jailed following the alleged altercation in Mankato early Sunday.
A police statement said officers came across the 24-year-old Kolstad while patrolling around 2 a.m. The 20-year-old Nelson was arrested at the scene.
KTOE-AM reported police are requesting felony charges of third-degree assault.
The family released a statement Sunday evening through the Mayo Clinic Health System, which also said they were grateful for the outpouring of support.
