New Sherburn leader takes reins
Jennifer Brookens — Staff WriterSHERBURN - Despite the cold weather, Sherburn's new administrator received a warm welcome on her first day on the job Monday.
"It's been a good day," Jamie Letzring said after her first City Council meeting, noting her first day consisted of time spent on the west history project, while the popular subjects of the day (besides the weather) were the weekend "Winter Wonderettes" performances and the successful snow removal.
Fortunately for Letzring and her family, they managed to get moved into town just before the deep freeze hit.
"We're renting currently and waiting for our house in Iowa to sell," she said. "We haven't unpacked all the boxes, but they're at least inside."
Letzring moved to Sherburn from Indianola, Iowa, near Des Moines. She recently completed her master's degree in public administration from Drake University.
"I'm very fortunate to be gaining employment in my field directly out of school," she said. "I started out in Simpson College in Indianola, where I got a degree in journalism and mass communications. I had an interest in politics, but I didn't want to run for office."
Both her parents and her husband's parents live in small towns in northwest Iowa, so the local atmosphere is no shock to Letzring.
"I grew up in a small town and my husband did too," she said. "In fact, we've actually moved closer to them now."
Letzring and her husband have a 5-month-old son.
