MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — A Mankato college student remains in critical condition after falling off the bumper of a city bus last weekend.

Twenty-one-year-old Dylan Smyth (smith) suffered serious head injuries after falling from the bus early Sunday.

In a statement Thursday, Smyth's family said he made two attempts to board the "sober bus," but the bus was full. His family says Smyth's attempt to ride on the back of the bus was not a stunt — he was trying to get home.

The Free Press of Mankato ( reports Smyth is listed at Minnesota State, Mankato, as a student studying manufacturing, engineering and technology. He lives in Mankato but is from New Ulm.

Smyth remains hospitalized at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, where he was listed in critical condition Thursday.
