Drama rules Raceway

Simon Heuer - Sentinel Sports Intern
POSTED: August 2, 2008

FAIRMONT - Dramatic comebacks, in one form or another, were the blueprint for victory for a number of drivers Friday at Fairmont Raceway during the races sponsored by Altenburg Construction and Slat Replacement Professionals.

Troy Gochanour of Armstrong was knocked out of the 360 modified feature race last week after he rolled his car in a nasty wreck on the first lap.

Gochanour and his team put together a new car for this week's races and it was good enough for a double win Friday night.

"We worked our butts off this week," Gochanour said. "This makes it worth it."

Two drivers from Fairmont, Kyle Steuber and heat winner Carl Wade, were in an early battle for the top spot in the feature race until Wade bumped into Steuber and knocked them both out of contention.

After the caution flag was raised, the door was open for Gochanour to take the lead for good.

Karmen Dather of Fairmont had a dramatic win of her own in the pro hornets feature race.

Dather slowly made her way to the front of the pack after starting the race in the very back of the field. She worked her way past every driver in the race and finally caught and passed Jared Nicoson of Armstrong on the final back straightaway to secure the narrow victory.

Total credit for the victory and ability to come from behind was given to her cheering section in the grandstands, Dather said.

Alex Schubbe of Mapleton took dead last in the first heat of novice hornets but came out and won the feature.

"I just get a feel for the track in the heat race," Schubbe said. "The feature is when it counts."

Schubbe held off last week's double winner Lyle Sathoff, who finished second.

Luke Sathoff of Jackson and Roger Picray of Emmetsburg, Iowa were in a battle for the lead during the modified feature race until Sathoff spun out on turn four near the middle of the race.

The restart allowed for Roger Nielsen of Estherville, Iowa to take the lead.

Nielsen, who finished third last week, battled throughout the race with Jason Cummins of New Richland and Eric Dailey of Armstrong, who finished first and second last week, respectively.

Nielsen crossed the line first this time followed by Cummins and then Dailey.

Jake Grathwohl of Fairmont won the stock car feature race and took a very close second in the second heat race.

Heat winners Doug Jenkins of Winnebago and Jeffrey Larson of Lakefield were fighting for first place until one of Larson's tires came off and rolled down the front straightaway to start lap 9 of 20.

Jenkins took the lead and maintained it until he was passed by Grathwohl with two laps to go.

Grathwohl won a close race that denied Jenkins a double win and his first feature win at Fairmont Raceway this season.

The hobby stocks feature race was won in dominating fashion by Dan Thate of Fairmont who took the lead after a caution restart on lap 3 of 10.

Racing continues at Fairmont Raceway next Friday with hot laps starting at 7 p.m.
