Father, son net victories
Simon Heuer - Sentinel Sports InternFAIRMONT - A father-son duo took home double wins in their respective races Friday night at Fairmont Raceway in the races sponsored by Nuway Cooperative and Numart Cenex Convienence Stores.
Points leader Nate Coopman of Mankato continued his dominance of the pro hornets and his father Jerry Coopman of Mankato swept the stock car field.
Nate Coopman battled against Karmen Dather of Fairmont in a feature race that came down to a last second pass on the final turn.
Dather took the lead on the back straightaway, but Coopman caught and passed her when she went too high into turn three.
The win gave Nate Coopman his second feature win in a row and his seventh this season.
Jerry Coopman came out on top of a stock car race that was plagued by caution flags.
The night was running smoothly until the stock cars produced seven caution flags in just the first seven laps.
Jerry Coopman took the lead after the third caution flag and didn't look back.
"It was a great night," Jerry Coopman said of the father-son sweep. "I can't believe it."
The 360 modified race skipped right over the caution flag and went stright to the red stop flag after a nasty wreck on turn four of lap one.
Points leader Dustin Phillip of Fairmont and Troy Gochanour of Armstrong both flipped their cars and had to leave the race. Neither driver was injured during the wreck.
The race was restarted and Josh Raimann of Wells, Josh Ruby of Lakota, Iowa, and Mark Sathoff of Dolliver, Iowa, battled for first.
There were various lead changes throughout the race, but going into the last lap Raimann and Sathoff collided and were both knocked out of the top three.
Ruby was able to survive all of the collisions and go on to win his second feature this season.
"I got a little lucky I guess," Ruby said. "I'm just glad I missed that big wreck on the first lap. I just squeezed by."
New Richland's Jason Cummins won the modifieds feature.
Cummins was in a battle the entire race with heat winner James Slawson of Spencer, Iowa and Roger Nielsen of Estherville, Iowa.
Last week's feature winner, Eric Dailey of Armstrong, joined in after a caution flag on lap 12 of 20, but Cummins was able to hold him off.
Dustin Larson of Rushmore took second to Rick Heenan of Fairmont in the second heat of hobby stocks, but came back to beat him in the feature race.
The novice hornets races produced another double winner when Lyle Sathoff of Armstrong beat points leader Joe DeVries of Spencer, Iowa in a close race.
Racing continues next week at Fairmont Raceway with hot laps beginning at 7 p.m.
