Wannarka, Ranes net 1st features

Simon Heuer - Sentinel Sports Intern
POSTED: July 19, 2008

FAIRMONT - Victory lane at Fairmont Raceway welcomed two first-time feature winners, along with an abundance of familiar faces, at the races sponsored by Graham Tire on Friday night.

Dustin Wannarka of Truman and Tony Ranes of Lake Mills, Iowa, each collected their first career feature wins in hobby stocks and 360 modifieds, respectively.

"It's about time," Wannarka said of his first career win. After Wannarka finished a close second in his heat race, he came out strong in the feature and led the entire time.

Dustin Larson of Rushmore and Tyler Ignaszewski of Alden battled throughout the race, with Larson taking second place after a dramatic pass on the back straightaway.

The 360 modified race was restarted three times due to caution, but that didn't stop Ranes from collecting his first career victory.

The second caution flag came out when points leader Mark Gartner got in a crash that eventually took him out of the race. Three more caution flags were waved throughout the race.

With three laps to go, Ranes took advantage of the final restart and won.

There also were a number of winners who were very familiar with victory lane.

Nate Coopman of Mankato passed Alex Emory of Wells on the back straightaway of the last lap to claim his sixth pro hornets feature win at Fairmont Raceway this season.

When Coopman's car started smoking early in the race, the victory looked improbable, but he found a way to win like he has all season.

The only dual winner of the night was Joe DeVries of Spencer, Iowa, racing with the novice hornets. DeVries won his heat and the feature by a considerable margin and collected his third feature win at Fairmont Raceway this season.

"The track was pretty nice tonight," DeVries said. "Even after a couple of bad weeks you know you can always bounce back."

Tom Suess of New Ulm won the stock car race and secured his third feature victory in the past four weeks at Fairmont Raceway.

Suess was neck-and-neck the entire race with heat winners Doug Jenkins of Winnebago and Jerry Coopman of Mankato. After a long caution with seven laps remaining, Suess pulled away and won in dominating fashion.

Eric Dailey of Armstrong won the the modifieds feature the last race of the night. Dailey was awarded the feature victory last week due to a disqualification, but this is his first true return to victory lane since he won the season opener at Fairmont Raceway on May 9.

"It's been a while," Dailey said. "The track was a little rough up top, made for a good workout."

Dailey entered the race in second place in the points standings.

Racing continues at 7 p.m. next Friday at Fairmont Raceway with a Limo Jump as the special entertainment at intermission.

I'm predicting Doug Jenkins (Winnebago) to come back strong in the second half of the season and take the title. When it happens, i'll be expecting some compliments.
