Shaun McGuire batted 3-for-4, Brock Beadle was 2-for-2 and Aaron Siefken collected a pair of hits in the Eagles’ 15-5, six-inning Corn Belt Conference victory over the Corwith-Wesley-Luverne Panthers in Lone Rock, Iowa.
The Eagles’ pitching combination allowed only two hits, but combined for 13 walks and four hit batters to allow the Panthers the bulk of their runs.
“Our pitching was really low. He (Blake Pedersen) had trouble obviously and the kid we brought in (Phil Maze) hasn’t pitched since freshman ball. ... We did do a few good things,” said Eagle co-head coach Mike Elsbecker.
The home team netted nine of its runs during the first two innings, jumping out to a 9-2 advantage.
Panther starting pitcher Kyle Pedersen issued a walk to Maze, followed by an error that allowed McGuire to reach. Maze came home on Brock Beadle’s single before Nick Larson was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Pedersen.
Pedersen got aboard on a fielder’s choice to score McGuire, but Brock Beadle was eliminated at third for the second out.
Larson eventually came in on a Brett Beadle double, before Pedersen’s courtesy runner – Grant Laubenthal – and Brett Beadle both scored on a wild pitch for a 5-1 lead after one full inning.
Chris Rock and Maze led off the second inning with free passes and both came in on McGuire’s hard-hit single back up the box. One groundout later, Brock Beadle singled in McGuire before Brock Beadle eventually scored on a Pedersen groundout.
The home team added four more runs in the fifth off Panther reliever Tommy McGregor.
Maze led off with a single to left and scored on McGuire’s follow-up double to right. McGuire then trotted across when Siefken singled to right, stole second, claimed third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.
Brock Beadle then drew a walk, moved up two bases on an error and scored on a Larson sacrifice fly.
The Eagles then put the game away via the 10-run rule in the sixth inning when Rock and Maze drew consecutive walks, McGuire singled to shallow right, but Rock was eliminated 8-5 at third base. Maze claimed third on an error and then scored when Siefken beat out an infield hit for the 15th run.
Larson doubled off the fence in left field to drive in Brock Beadle with the other run in the fourth inning.
The Panthers’ best inning proved to be the fourth, scoring three runs. Tanner Holmes, Daniel Anderson and Brandon Heginger reached on a walk, hit batter and a walk, respectively. Holmes and Anderson each scored on consecutive hit batters before Maze came in to pitch for the Eagles.
Heginger also scored on a wild pitch later in the frame, reducing North Sentral Kossuth’s advantage to 10-5 at that juncture.
Joe Studer, who had both the Panthers’ hits, singled home Kyle Pedersen in the first inning before Anderson walked and scored on a fielder’s choice off Jason Carroll’s bat in the second.
Blake Pedersen picked up the win, allowing five runs on one hit in three-plus innings. He struck out three, walked six and hit three. Maze allowed one hit in three innings. He walked one, struck out three and hit one.
Kyle Pedersen was the losing pitcher, allowing nine runs on four hits in two frames. He struck out one, walked five and hit one. McGregor gave up six runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out two and walked seven.
McGuire had three RBIs and scored three times, while Maze scored three times and stole four bases. Brock Beadle added four runs scored and two RBIs, while Larson and Blake Pedersen each drove in two runs.
