Fairmont sweeps 'AA' crowns

Fairmont’s girls scored 291.5 points to runner-up Hutchinson’s 187 in Class AA competition, while Fairmont’s boys held off the Tigers 215-195 for the team title during the Fairmont Invitational on Friday at Cardinal Track.
In the Class A competition, Martin County West’s girls emerged victorious by a slimmer margin, holding off the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet Knight Raiders by a 166-163 score. On the boys’ side, it was the opposite story as the Knight Raiders edged the Mavericks for team glory, 148-140.5.
The Cardinal boys won seven races in the Class AA ranks.
Josh Koehler, Jeff Janssen, Jesse Walters and Trevor Bulock opened the meet with a win in the 4x800 in 8 minutes and 39.4 seconds.
Later, Paul Mallory secured three individual victories. He started his day by winning the high hurdles in 14.5 seconds, then took the triple jump in 43 feet, 3 inches and won the 300s in 40.9.
Mallory neared school records in the high hurdles and the triple jump.
The 4x100 squad of Alex Stefanske, Dakota Gilbertson, Zach Roggow and Matt Izen later won in 45.7 seconds, before Taylor Kotewa captured the pole vault title in 11 feet, 9 inches.
The 4x400-meter relay squad of Bulock, Koehler, Walters and Janssen closed out the meet with a win in 3:30.8.
“It was just so fun to get this in in a nice, warm day. ... There were a lot of good performances tonight,” said Fairmont head coach Bob Bonk.
Bonk noted the personal-best performances of his top two pole vaulters, with Jesse Hill taking fourth in 11-3.
The Blue Earth Area boys placed third with 140 points and ended up with a pair of firsts.
The Bucs’ Dan Lyke won the discus in 123-11 and Robin Ulrich topped all in the high jump in 6-0.
For Bonk’s girls lineup, there were 10 first-place finishes accumulated.
The girls’ 4x800 team of Mary Hitchcock, Laura Hamp, Taylor Rather and Jami Riley won in 10:12.6, before Kaleigh Meyer later claimed the shot put title with a 32-3 throw.
The 4x200 squad of Brittany Barnes, Jennie Brammeier, Sam Waletich and Alyssa Behrens won in 1:55.6.
Riley and Hitchcock picked up individual wins in the 400-meter dash (1:03.4) and 300 hurdles (48.5), respectively.
Sam Waletich won the 200 in 27.8 seconds and Taylor Rather claimed the 3,200 in 12:29.8.
The 4x100 relay of Linnea Erickson, Kelly Sandoz, Waletich and Brammeier won in 54.5.
Fairmont’s pole vault duo of Erica Thate and Katie Krumholz tied for first with 8-3 efforts and the 4x400 team of Hamp, Riley, Hitchcock and Steph Brolsma won in 4:14.6.
Bonk noted Hitchcock’s 300 hurdles time was her best ever and her 4x400 split was also a personal best.
In the girls Class A, Madelia/Truman finished fourth with 86 points, Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther was fifth with 67 and the Fairmont junior varsity was sixth with 56.
The victorious Mavericks coasted to nine wins.
Alyssa Taylor won the high jump in 5-0, before Taylor Olson conquered the high hurdles in 16.2.
Olson later won the open 100 in 12.8, before the 4x200 team of Steph Biehn, Hailey Holtz, Kayla Traetow and Kelsey Jensen won in 1:55.2.
Jenna Gaalswyk claimed the 1,600 in 5:52.0, before Madison Marsh had to go a quarter of that in 1:03.1. Megan Schultz topped all in the 300 hurdles in 53.3.
Taylor Olson continued her winning ways later with a top triple jump of 31-0 for the Mavericks. The 4x100 foursome of Olson, Hailey Holtz, Kayla Traetow and Sarah Knaak rounded out the individual wins in 54.1 seconds.
Madelia/Truman’s Sophie Haslip claimed the lone Jayhawks’ triumph, taking the 3,200-meter run in 12:45.0.
In the Class A boys ranks, Madelia/Truman placed fifth with 79 points, while the Fairmont JV was sixth with 37 and GHEC/ML claimed seventh with 25.
Alex Carpenter led the Mavericks as he was responsible for two first-place finishes and a win as part of a relay. Carpenter won the triple jump in 40-4 and took the long jump in 20-3. The collective of Ryan Ask, Spencer Moore, Eric Holtz and Carpenter won the 4x100 in 46 seconds even.
Caleb Krusemark won the 1,600 in 4:59.7 and Matt Stoffel later doubled the distance to win the 3,200 in 10:55.5.
Taylor Kotewa chalked up a field win for Fairmont junior varsity, taking the shot put in 39-10.
Fairmont, Blue Earth Area, Martin County West, Madelia/Truman and Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther compete in the Sub-Section 6 Meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at Fairmont.
The Blue Earth Area girls compete in the True Team State Meet at 10 a.m. today at Stillwater High School.
