MNsure improving, but budget still questionable

February 12, 2014

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota lawmakers are warning leaders of the state's health exchange that they must figure out budget needs soon as insurance enrollment trends point to a 2015 deficit.

The Legislature's MNsure oversight committee is meeting Wednesday. Leaders of the exchange told lawmakers that they have made significant progress in fixing problems with their website and call center, but said slower-than-expected enrollment in commercial insurance through MNsure continue to point to budget problems in 2015 and 2016.

MNsure officials say they hope enrollment spikes in March and helps resolve budget issues. But lawmakers say MNsure officials need to start disclosing how possible budget shortfalls would be covered.

MNsure must give lawmakers a proposed 2015 budget by March 15. MNsure acting CEO Scott Leitz says more funds from the federal government are possible.
