External panel will review UMinn clinical research

December 6, 2013

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — University of Minnesota's president has agreed to an outside review of clinical research practices in the wake of the 2004 death of a man who committed suicide while enrolled in a drug study.

President Eric Kaler says he will form an outside panel to review how the university treats people enrolled in clinical trials. The Faculty Senate requested the review. Also, nearly 3,500 petition signatures were delivered to Gov. Mark Dayton's office Thursday asking for an external review.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier investigated the death of Dan Markingson and said it found no evidence of wrongdoing by the university. The school also was dismissed from a lawsuit filed by Markingson's family.

A family friend who delivered the signatures to Dayton, Mike Howard, tells Minnesota Public Radio Kaler's announcement is a "tremendous first step."
