Quinn endorses de Blasio for NYC mayor

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn is endorsing her former Democratic foe, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, to be mayor.

Quinn was atop the polls for much of the Democratic primary. She was frequently targeted by de Blasio, especially for helping Mayor Michael Bloomberg run for a third term.

But the candidates set aside their differences for a City Hall news conference. Quinn said Tuesday she's proud to endorse de Blasio, and they downplayed their disagreements during the campaign.

Quinn finished third in the primary.

De Blasio became the undisputed Democratic nominee after runner-up Bill Thompson bowed out Monday.

He'll face Republican nominee Joe Lhota in the Nov. 5 general election.
