The world is about choices. Many people feel entitled and want the best given to them. The thought of starting at the bottom and working up is a thing of the past. Start at the 3rd shift, do good, get noticed. Hardee's is paying over $10 an hour to start. Move up, do good. There are jobs in Fairmont, they may not be what you dreamed of, but they may be able to turn into them. We will never see the high paid union jobs back.

Welding is a physically demanding, hot stinky, dirty job but it is one job that doesn't require much if any schooling. I took a welding class back in high school and after I graduated took a job welding making it 45k+/ year.....not bad money for a high school education.

Most places that need welders are short on 2nd or 3rd shift. Thats where the better pay is because almost nobody wants that life.. All I was saying, as my previous post says, is that if it is for him, go for it. Any person that age who can set aside half check should be applauded! Congrats man! You are in the minority! Especially if you are working 2nd or 3rd shift to get incentive pay and putting in 60 hour work weeks. Which I assume you are! As far as pay I wouldnt say it is too much higher compared to how much everything else has gone up... gas, insurance, etc. That said, you can do ok as a welder.

Try reading phoenix.....says if he puts half away next 4 years which is very optimistic in my opinion but possible. Why are you so negative about this? There is a shortage of welders so the pay has been rising for several years. Working conditions, especially ventilation requirements have improved greatly as well.

I think it is called pride. You don't have to have a life if you are young. Work hard when your young, sit back and listen to all the people complain about being better than that. 20 years old making that kind of money, putting half away for the next 4 years. Keep on complaining, his house and truck is paid for, $100k in his 401k. Yep, I would complain also.

"$62,000"? I would say "overtime", phoenix. AGCO? Wire-feed and horizontal, what's the skill needed there?
