Local deans educate, enforce rules

March 6, 2014

FAIRMONT — They each carry a lofty title you’d expect to find on a college campus, but for Andy Traetow and Alex Schmidt being a dean of students simply means doing everything in their power to......

"what the Principal did a few years back?" I remember when I first came to the Fairmont High School, back 10 years ago, and we -still- had a Dean. Her name was Marcia Findley, and she was one of the greatest people ever.

Blue, you're so out of touch with how school works that I honestly feel sorry for your children, if you have any.

I have 2 young boys in the elementary school and can not say enough good about Mr.Schmidt he does a great job with the kids and as for the previous comment.. we live in a different world then we did 20 years ago. Dealing with issues that at one time where not a problem.. I applaud the school system for recognizing that we need extra staff to help in these areas..

"Life for these children has complexities you never understood when you went to school so please stop thinking that you are the standard by which to judge"

I call BS. Students still need to be able to read, write, add and subtract. (ever watch one of these HS students count change in the local grocery store?) It is pure laziness on the part of the Principal's to pass work off to someone else. And we the tax-paying public seem to allow it.

Would people please stop evaluating everything that is done according to how it was when they were in school. How egocentric.

Much has changed including that there are fewer schools (if I am correct, there were 4 schools with 4 principals in this town up to about 20 yrs ago) with many students coming from diverse backgrounds. Life for these children has complexities you never understood when you went to school so please stop thinking that you are the standard by which to judge.

The addition of Deans at the schools has been a valuable addition and I am thankful that these children are receiving the guidance and correction from them.

"He serves as Fairmont Elementary School's dean of students, a new position this term."

'"The primary thing we deal with is student discipline," Traetow said.'

So we *create* a new position to do what the Principal did a few years back? And what is the principal doing? At some point *the people* will say ENOUGH spending, live w/ in your means.
