Why is the U.S. still paying for these bases?

Americans may be paying more for defense while getting less in troop strength, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel hinted recently....

It does not state in the article where the Editors are getting this information from, but troop levels in Europe and Japan have been reduced 90% since the end of the Cold War. The US Army is down from 6 divisions (apx 21,000 per division) to just 2 brigades (apx 5,000 per). Marines make up the bulk of the Japanese troops and they are rotated in and out. I agree there could be some down-sizing, but the fallacy that we are maintaining huge overseas bases is just that, a fallacy.

There are bases in the US that may need to be closed. But every time the Sec of Def tries to cut a base in the US a Senator cries foul.
