The waiting week is not universal. Aside from that,'s probably not politically possible to not pay the federal employees after reopening. The average American isn't going to let them be harmed by something that wasn't their fault.

I was hoping the TEA party folks would shutdown the government and put us into default. WE ARE SPENDING TOO MUCH!

I am also curious why police are now posted around the National Mall in Washington, DC, when normally you wouldn't find a Park Ranger or policeman there? It's a big open field...

If "Non-essential" government employees are not working, then what do they do the rest of the year?

Government employees get back pay because of the unions.
