Keep in mind that it's the people who have planes there that are paying hangar rentals, buying gas, availing themselves of whatever maintenance facilities are offered. Whether Five Lakes charges them landing fees, I don't know but, if so, that's all the more money to be lost both to the FBO and the city if the guys and gals decide to move their craft to Blue Earth, St. James, or some guy's private grass strip. And as the word gets around that the runway may be tied up with race cars, a lot of transient traffic will go elsewhere.

Fact is, the important question here is not whether the city council is happy with the airport or the FBO. The question is whether the aviators are. If they aren't, or if they perceive that a friend of theirs is getting hassled ... well, perhaps all sides in this quarrel ought to take a look at an Omaha Sectional. I don't think some folks in this controversy realize how many airports are within an easy drive of Fairmont.

An "inconvenience"? I can't find an airline that flies in to Fairmont on a regular basis. If there is one please let me know. To shutdown the airspace for one Sunday afternoon means a "Notice to Airmen" goes out.

The city tells me the airport can't be shutdown for ONE SUNDAY afternoon? That is B*ll Sh*t, and everyone knows it!

There's a great deal more to aviation than airlines; and how a NOTAM offsets the inconvenience to the pilots who fly in and out of, hangar, buy fuel and otherwise support this airport eludes me.

Shut down a general aviation airport on a weekend day and I guarantee no drag races will make up the lost revenue; any more than an airshow would draw the same crowd as the Indy 500.
