Treat animals humanely

February 5, 2013

To the Editor: Thank you for publishing heart-warming dog and cat stories. I enjoy reading those. Thankfully, there are caring people like Geoff and Anne Warmouth....

As Jaxson's "mom" your letter struck a cord in my heart. Normally I do not believe in internet banter, but you have taken something positive and twisted it into an negative. The difference that Luke and Jaxson make in these children's lives is profound. Yet you are caught up in the first paragraph of the story. Shame on you for having such a closed mind! Let me tell you when we see these children at the grocery store and they ask where jaxson is, they are not looking for him so they can poke him in the eye they want him because they LOVE him. Please take your blinders off.

Oh Ms. Meier...I guessing you don't view the comments on the internet, but you are very mistaken about Jaxson and his family. Jaxson does wonders for these kids. He teaches them many things and comforts them. For kids that don't have or never have had a dog at home, sure he may receive an occasional eye poke or tounge pull. But that is learning and from a person that has had a dog in the house my entire life...they bring comfort to the kids. They are not being abused and most likely enjoy the attention anyway...I'm appalled that you would take a wonderful article like this and make it sounds like animal abuse. Not only does my daughter benefit from the comfort of Jaxson, but I've also seen many, many children spend time just enjoying having Jaxson there to pet.

I agree with saraoec. Pull your tongue. Does it hurt. No. If it does you may want to see a doctor. Pets are great for kids and adults. My dogs never whine when we pull their tongue. In fact they come back for more. My dogs are treated better than most kids. I believe you have taken the eye poke out if context. I'm sure the kids do not poke the dogs in the eye on purpose but rather when trying to play with or pet the dog. You need to leave your house more often.

I'm sure the children love having Jaxson visit, and love touching and playing with him. It's up to the adults to use the opportunity to show the children how to treat him kindly and gently. This sounds like a wonderful experience for these kids!
