Cupcake Savior and other "Thanks-givings" this week...

November 19, 2012 - Jennifer Brookens
The Girl's birthday has come and gone, and I have a few days of reprieve before the next fiasco. For those of you who read the last blog and want to know how the cupcakes turned out... well, they turned out excellent because I didn't make them.

I caught my co-worker Kylie Saari giggling hysterically as she read my blog entry last week (probably giggling at my ineptitude in the kitchen). But she took pity on me and offered to make the cupcakes in exchange for an in-house reporter chore, and I was sold. And yes, the red velvet cupcakes were cream-filled and fantastic!

So that's one of my "thanks-givings" for this week. What are some of my others? Well, I am always thankful for my family. Despite my grousing about some of their antics, I know not having The Boy and The Girl around would give me a fuller wallet and clean house, but my life would be painfully dull and lonely without them. I'm also grateful for having a husband that puts up with my mood swings and my less-than-stellar homemaking qualities. Each one knows the other is far from perfect, but that's OK...

Gooey sentimental moment aside, I am grateful that I don't have a lot of Christmas shopping to do, thanks to eBay and Amazon stockpiling since July. I used to be one of those hardcore day-after-Thanksgiving shoppers, but now avoiding the stores on that day is my form of protest. But I will still give the local stores some of my business between now and Dec. 25. I have been less stressed at Christmas time since I took the advice of "Unplugging The Christmas Machine," a book I find myself recommending a lot this time of year. And finally, due to my lack of baking skills, I'm thankful for those boxed and canned staples of Thanksgiving, so even someone like me can pull off a Thanksgiving dinner. Hopefully, it won't trigger any fire alarms. But if it does, at least I'll have something to write about on the front page for Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
