Halloween to Holiday spiral

October 17, 2012 - Jennifer Brookens
Yes, it is fast approaching. Just after things have settled down and gotten "back to normal" from the summer daze, we have that "rush rush" time that goes from Halloween to New Years.

It seems to start earlier for parents in this area, since in t-minus 48 minutes, the kids will be out for a five-day weekend, thanks to MEA and teachers workshops. Maybe it's because I'm not a Minnesota native, but I NEVER got a five day weekend! What's more, why can't we get five day weekends now?!?! Now the kids have pumpkin-carving, costume-making, and candy hoarding on the brain. Meanwhile, in the stores Christmas is already trying to crowd out the Halloween seasonal aisle! Which means the campaign to put up the Christmas decorations will begin as soon as the Halloween decor comes down, and I will AGAIN explain that in our house it is sacrilegious for any Santas, trees, or jingle bells to be displayed before Dec. 1.

But there is Another month between the two holidays, as much as the turkey population would like us to forget (yes the feathered and political kind! *rimshot* Election years certainly amp that spiral tension up to an 11, don't they?) But for November, not only will I have to worry about hosting a nine-year-old's birthday party, but what about Thanksgiving a few days later? Since us reporters sometimes have to work holidays, I have to determine whether we can make it to Gramma's (if she's willing) without having to eat and run... Or will I sign my own waiver to the insane asylum by trying to cook Thanksgiving dinner AND be on call at the same time?!

OK (breathe in... breathe out... breathe in... breathe out...) So, getting all that spiral anxiety out of my head for a moment, it was nice to see someone else put it so eloquently when Christina Applegate hosted Saturday Night Live last week and did a song and dance number about her favorite time of the year... BEFORE the Halloween to Holiday spiral. So, breathe, laugh, enjoy!
