Do you wear that?
July 17, 2012 - Jodelle Greiner
I’m a packrat and I’m not ashamed to admit that. I usually don’t have a problem with my tendency to save stuff until I move. Then it’s a big problem lugging all that stuff from one place to the next.
That’s why I’m determined to pare down my belongings, starting with my clothes.
No, I’m not going to throw out all my clothes today. I prefer the slow and steady process.
I heard about a method — can’t remember where — that I employed over the weekend. It’s very simple: Turn all your hangers around so they come over the rod from the back of the closet. As you wear the clothes, put them back on the hanger “the right way”, so it curves around the rod from the front. That way you can easily see what you’ve been wearing and what you don’t wear. You can do it by calendar year or do it by season or whatever length of time you choose.
I also went through my drawer for tops. Normally, I fold my t-shirts with the front out. I refolded every top so the back was out. Now, as I wear them, wash them and put them away, I will continue to fold them my normal way, with the fronts out. Then, I can easily see which shirts I’ve been wearing and which I haven’t been.
There’s other ways of marking which clothes you wear — little tags on the hangers for instance — but the principle is still the same. No matter which way you choose, it’s a honest way to determine what you actually wear and what is just hanging in your closet or sitting in drawers taking up room.
