The Swear Jar

October 24, 2011 - Jennifer Brookens
This is not the first time that language has been brought up in this blog. But now we are putting our money where our mouths are, in more ways than one.

A few days ago, the Girl got a talking-to for writing a bad word in a note when she was mad. But being the smarty-pants she is, she turned it around on me last night: "Mommy, why do you and Daddy say bad words then?" OK, so some have come out when yelling at inanimate objects, idiot drivers, or stepping in piles of cat puke first thing in the morning. Plus this past weekend with company visiting, things got a little ruckus once the kids were down for the night.

But I had to respect her for pointing it out and we made a deal. Thus, the swear jar that now sets in the dining room. So far, I've only had to put two nickels in, and luckily they were both small words. I personally thought that I should be allowed allotments for driving at rush times and when dealing with the cats, but no. My aim initially was just trying to be more conscious of what I say when the kids are around. (YES, what every parent is supposed to do anyway!) But maybe, just maybe, I should try to better myself a little bit more.

Or maybe I'll end up having a savings account just known as "the swear jar."
