Born to Be (Minnesota) Wild
February 14, 2011 - Jennifer Brookens
My husband has a cold for Valentine's Day. So it's a good thing our family got our Valentine's treat early.
Once a year, we get to pretend we live the high-life, when the Minnesota Wild has its Radio Affiliation appreciation night. Those stations that carry the Minnesota Wild games (as KSUM does) get an invite to a Wild game, but they also get the VIP treatment, such as the the suite box seats, tours and other little perks. After a few years of letting other station personnel enjoy the night, this year we got the privilege. Originally it was to be a "date night," but the kids ended up coming along too. And we ended up making some even better memories that way.
Being in the suite, there was enough room for an antsy 3-year-old to move around without being a disturbance. There was also snacks and drinks (soda and bottled water, and beer for the adults) that were complimentary, and the kids got into the action and loud music. (An event where you didn't have to sit still and be quiet!) But the highlight was when my husband and daughter got to ride on the Zamboni between the first and second period of the game. I know that's a memory that will stick with both Daddy and daughter forever. And, of course, the Wild won over the St. Louis Blues 3-1.
So it wasn't the classic romantic date, or the alone time most couples want for Valentines Day. But this way was probably better. I'll still take a rain check on a dinner out for two, though.
