An Olympic waste of time ...

August 25, 2008 - Lee Smith
OK, so that blog title is a little harsh.

I don't exactly hate the Olympics, but I can't say they thrill me either. I'm glad they're over. Someone sat down and decided to hold an international competition every four years that (mainly) features sports no one cares about. How often do you watch swimming or gymnastics on a Saturday afternoon? It's not like there are professional water polo teams. If there are, they're not on ESPN.

I'm not really buying all the international good will aspect either. Seems like a lot of Americans are really into whether the USA wins gold. But gold, silver, bronze or shut out, how does this improve your life? I do appreciate the concept of excellence in athletics, but when the world's fastest runners are shaving hundredths of a second off world records, where's the thrill? We get it. They're really, really fast. Great.

Michael Phelps won two fistfuls of gold medals at the Games. This was a big deal, apparently. One wonders, though, if Phelps will soon be forgotten, like the man whose record he beat. Mark Spitz wasn't even invited to be on hand for the occasion.

If you enjoyed the Olympics, good for you. We'll see you in four years. I'll be the one napping.
