Karma (Everything Happens For A Reason)
July 22, 2010 - Jennifer Brookens
My facebook status for the morning was "Another day in the rat race." Guess I took the race portion too literally.
But it did seem like I was racing through the day. Had to get going an hour and a half earlier than usual, get the kids dressed (which included the five minute struggle with the pantless wonder) and dropped off at daycare, and get two scheduled interviews by 9 a.m. - one in Iowa, and then one up in Fairmont.
So my patience was short. As I tried to get out of town, I was gritting my teeth at every red light (I hit them all) and all the people who would waltz across the street just after the light turned green ("C'Mon, that's what the crosswalks and signals are for!") Made the first meeting in Iowa, and was more or less on schedule as I zoomed back to Fairmont.
And that's when I saw Officer Fowler's squad car. And realized the red needle on the spedometer was well above 55 mph. Crap.
I could've tried to lie, flirt, argue or cry my way out of a ticket, but most of the local law enforcement know me a little too well for any of that to work (Not to mention it would either result in getting laughed at or a doubled fine for the insult). And I was admittedly going too fast for just a warning.
True, it's a chunk out of the "vacation" fund, but it could've been worse. It also could've been worse if I stayed on zoom into town, and collided with one of those pedestrians because I'd forgotten to ease off the pedal. I realized that all morning, God, fate, whatever you want to call it, was trying to get my attention and get me to slow down, but it took a little more of a kick this time.
At least there was no physical damage done.
