| | Read this book!July 14, 2010 - Kylie SaariAs a mother of a son, I had heard of the book, Boys Adrift, by Dr. Leonard Sax. I knew it had something to do with the troubles boys are having these days, but until it was lent to me by Fairmont Area superintendent Joe Brown, it wasn't on my reading list. The book was a quick read, but its statistics and research based observations are alarming. Sax lists the five factors he believes caused a generation of boys to lose their motivation, their masculinity, and their independence. Because I want you to read the book yourself, I won't list them here. The factors rang true to me, and although there is critisim about some of Sax's generalizations about girls and boys, I didn't find anything in this book contrived, nor did it seem he was pushing an agenda on his readers. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has close interaction with boys, be it parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers, etc. It is worthy of a discussion, and in some cases, it seems, changes in the ways boys are treated. I am not convinced that the five factors Sax brings up in this book are the only things causing boys to live with their parents indefinately, play video games for hours at a time, or, for the younger boys, have trouble sitting in their seats at school, but I think it is a good start.
