Spring Madness

May 6, 2010 - Jennifer Brookens

"A little Madness in the Spring/Is wholesome even for the King/But God be with the Clown/Who ponders this tremendous scene/This whole Experiment of Green/As if it were his own!" — Emily Dickinson

Like we didn't already know that this past winter was indeed one of the roughest — even for the seasoned Minnesotans  — I think we're seeing it now even as we're fully into spring.

This time of year, I'm used to seeing an increase report of truant students and juvenile pranks, and a little more recklessness. But some of the things we've been seeing this spring... Just two weekends ago, Minnesota saw eight teens killed in car accidents (and a local foursome cut it very close that same weekend!) A few days later, 29 pigs are stabbed by an allegedly intoxicated driver. Rumors circulate of shenanigans a little more sick and scary than usual going on at the schools (and with juvenile cases, there's only so much snooping the press can do before hitting the data privacy brick wall).  But we may only have to go to YouTube to find out...

Looks like we've definitely crossed the line from spring fever to spring madness this season. But I fear what it will take for this fever/madness to break? Being the police/crime reporter, I honestly don't relish the idea of writing about a tragic death(s) or ruined lives just because the nicer weather and the promise of summer make us feel a litlle more carefree and foolish. Remember the laws of gravity and physics still apply: What comes up, must come down and For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Be careful out there...
