New Year's Eve
December 31, 2009 - Jennifer Brookens
My friend's Facebook status summed it up best: "You know you're no longer cool when you know where the New Years Eve action is at, but will be spending the evening playing Crazy 8s, Go Fish, and will probably be in bed by 10:30."
We tried to make a date of it and Heaven knows we need a night out. But our two most common babysitting options have opted out on us. Ever since "Gramma" has gotten her second wind, we just know better than to even ask on a weekend evening. Yes, Gramma has a much hotter social life than Mom and Dad.
Then there was the family friend's teenage daughter - a sweet girl who seems to genuinely love the kids. But as is the nature of the beast, she turned 16, has a car and a boyfriend (or had - can never keep up on the teenage relationship statuses), and therefore babysitting has fallen to the bottom of her list. And naturally, all those people who said, "Call me anytime to babysit," when we had sweet little babies are now spoken for, especially on New Years Eve.
Could be worse though. I get to stay warm and cozy; no uncomfortable dresses or shoes while walking around in snowdrifts. And definitely no worries about spending too much on drinks or drunk driving (except for those cars that tear through our alleyway and could end up flying into our garage). I honestly haven't had a New Years Eve out since the kids came along and if I recall, I drank too much, made a fool of myself, passed out on a co-worker's couch and spent the first day of 2002 hugging the bathroom commode. Yeah, I guess you could say I've come a long way.
But my wish list for 2010 will include a date night... hopefully before next New Years Eve. Cheers!
