More interesting news ...

July 7, 2008 - Lee Smith
Since March, we have had several more significant events going on in the area that will serve as nominees for our Top 10 stories of the year. Not the least of these is rising prices, across the board, from commodities, to ag land, to food prices, to fuel prices and people's response to them. There also has been the cemetery controversy near Wilbert, the failed school referendum (and talk of a new one), the six-day suspension of the Truman principal, an intruder shot in rural Truman, the opening of an ethanol plant and the delay in opening of another. In addition, Martin Luther High School marked 25 years in Northrop. What are the criteria for these nominees? Well, obviously, they are significant public events or happenings. Your wedding or your child's birth is probably your "story of the year." We focus on trends (like rising prices) and the big spot news events that get people talking all over the area. People, including those in this building, have different opinions about what constitutes the most important stories. When it's time to vote in December, we let the newsroom cast ballots, as well as each department head, from advertising to composition. We hope we get a good mix of input this way.
