Organic veggies, just down the road!

September 5, 2009 - Kylie Saari
I am ashamed to admit it.

One of Fairmont's two farmer's markets is just down the street from my house, and yet this was the first week I visited.

A beautiful day, we walked down, and truthfully, I didn't expect much. My garden up and died out of the blue a couple weeks ago, and I selfishly hoped it was a symptom of the season which every grower experienced, and not just a commentary on my lack of attention I paid to it this year.

My need for garden fresh tomatoes outweighed my fear of finding out my garden problems are an operator error and I hoofed it down the street.

What a delight I found there!

One seller offered me all of his tomatoes for $2 — he was packing up and did want to bring them home.

Another, and organic producer I haven't seen there before, had gorgeous yellow beets, and squash! *sigh* I love this season.

It turns out, our friendly local farmer selling organic produce is a supplier to St. Peter's Co-op. All this time I needed only to go four blocks to the north to find what I had been driving an hour to get.

I brought my booty home and spend the day gleefully chopping, blanching, and creating yummy food.

Go people, support local food, eat well, and be giddy over dinner.
