Oil

June 2, 2009 - Kylie Saari
I had the opportunity to interview an artist recently, Joe Burns. You might know him, he used to be a local. Anyway, now he is the artist of the month at the Red Rock Center, where he is showing his oil paintings. I haven't been up to see them yet, but I definitely plan too. Oil on canvas is one of my favorite mediums, and Burns is currently training to paint like the renaissance painters I so admire. Naturally, this is of interest to me. But Burns also directed me to the website of his mentor, Jeffery Larson. As a not artistically talented person, but someone who loves oil paintings, I was amazed by this man's work. I sat there staring at my computer, trying to make sure I was actually looking at oil paintings. Some of them are clearly oil paintings, and I enjoyed seeing them, but several have reflective surfaces so skillfully done they look like photographs. I am sure I am outing myself as uncultured in some way for not knowing this was even possible with oils, but seriously people. Head over to www.jefferytlarson.com. Let me know what you think.
