my 2 cents is going to the daycare this time...
April 28, 2009 - Jennifer Brookens
I promised myself and those 5 or 6 of you who read this blog that I wouldn't go on any political rants here, but this time I just gotta say something. Granted, someone else in my family has spoken out on the subject... But I gotta speak up too.
Does anyone else find it ironic that the city shoots down a move for a daycare but OKs the liquor store? It's almost like saying, "OK, you working families with small children are outta luck. But hey, we'll make sure you can at least have a couple drinks while you try to figure out what you can do with the little ankle biters!" (And yes, that WAS sarcasm there!)
OK - enough of that. On the positive side, I give props to Stepping Stones and all the workers there. Daycare is HARD to find! The moment I found out by surprise that I was expecting a second child, the search was on. My daughter's daycare couldn't take any infants for at least a year at that point. So I was elated when Stepping Stones was able to take my infant son part-time. Then they answered my prayers again when I had no choice but to have my baby in full-time daycare. Eventually, he was old enough that my daughter's in-home daycare provider was able to accept him. But the personnel at Stepping Stones were always willing to offer a helping hand or just an ear to listen to my concerns. The ladies (and guys now) working there have my utmost respect.
Too bad the city officials don't truly seem to grasp (or even care?) what a vital role Stepping Stones is to the young families of Fairmont. And then city officials wonder why there aren't more young people and families in this community. I would take a look at the booming headlines of the April 28 issue of the Sentinel for a clue on that one.
